Journal entry by Ken Gericke

Picture perfect weather for a bike ride, beautiful Washington County NY and Vermont scenery, and 16 Crooked canes/ezriders add up to an ideal day. We meet in Greenwich for the short caravan to the start at the canoe access site on the Battenkill River near the Vermont border. Getting ready for our day in the parking lot, last minute adjustments to brakes, tires and chains, I notice many new faces. For Thursday's ride we have Tom and friends Bob McMahon, Mike and Bob, Annie and her friend Pauline, and 2 additional new CCs John and Ray. Also attending are CC regulars Donna, Anita, Jim Ralston, Jim Israel, Eric, Peter, and Don.

With warming temps we begin our loop from NY into Vermont via remote, sometimes hard packed dirt back roads. The 1st half of this route is mostly a gradual uphill, a few steeper sections, enough to get the heart pumping....and the need to shed some outer jackets. With an elevation change of approximately 700' in the 1st 10 miles, we reach our height of land and prepare for a long, exhilarating downhill to Sandgate Vt, our lunch stop for the day.

Sandgate Vt is a picture postcard setting hidden in a secluded valley....a couple houses, an old church and schoolhouse....quaint doesn't quite cover it. Our lunch spot is actually in a very old cemetery on a hill overlooking the little village and surrounding mountains. We savor a very pleasant picnic in the sun, and a few caners explore the cemetery with many headstones dating to the late 1700s. Whole families, generation after generation peacefully interred side by side. There is a Captain Jones 1794...perhaps a Revolutionary War soldier, the Hurds, 20-30 members of one family, husbands, wives, infant children, grandparents, spanning over 200 years.

Time to head on, we reluctantly pack up and continue our ride, heading back towards NYS...a little side trip crossing the Arlington Covered Bridge, a short stretch passing an old colonial house, once the summer home of Norman Rockwell. Back again at the cars, a great day pedaling 18 spectacular miles, Thanks to all!
