Cat and Thomas ~ Dec 16, 2011

Journal entry by Lenore Reber

Sixteen Canes gathered at Edgecomb Pond after spotting cars at the Thomas parking area. We were especially glad to welcome back Sam and meet Nancy's friends. Cold and brisk winds energized us to quickly ascend Cat Mountain, with occasional pauses to ford streams, sidestep mud, and avoid ice. We rejoiced at the views from the top, from Crane looming in the west to the Narrow's islands in the east. The winds eased and we had an enjoyable lunch with a spectacular view of sunlight filtering through clouds onto Lake George. Soon 10 hikers started back down Cat while Ray and his harem of 5 women headed for Thomas. The way was beautiful, including climbing a hill, a nob, along the side of a ridge with frequent views of Lake George, another nob with views of Crane and Gore, 4 more hills until we could finally see the cabin across a steep valley. After scaling the cliffs, we enjoyed our second lunch, Christmas cookies, and the view from the porch. We were disheartened to see some vandalism at the cabin, but the mountains and lake retained their magic. We took the dirt roads back to the cars, but plan to return to Thomas, revisit the magical hills we had traversed, and find the new blue trail to the summit and down to the road.
