Watch Hill and the Holey Boulders ~ Sep 14, 2017

Journal entry by Lenore Reber

The six Canes who chose to listen to the most positive weather forecasts had two dry walks, with clouds giving way to sunshine. The beginning of the Watch Hill trail is a broad, gentle uphill. Because of the threat of rain, we decided to take the steep shortcut, which required some scrambling up soft loam through a white pine grove. After a little searching, we regained the trail and wound our way to the first overlook. Snowy Mountain was socked in with clouds but we could see cliffs a little further south, which might be the source of the Holey Boulders. The next overlook gave us views of Lewey Lake and the Jessup River arm of Indian Lake, as well as a great ledge for having lunch. The way down was easier, along a newly developed cross country ski trail.

Then we walked up the road for two tenths of a mile to the unmarked Holey Boulders trail. The mile long trial meandered past occasional fungi, wild flowers and red splotched hobble bush. We soon arrived at truly huge boulders, scattered among trees covering more than an acre. Many had holes bored deep into them. We explored for a while and then decided it was time to retire to the Rebers' deck overlooking Adirondack Lake for cookies and lemonade and cider, a lovely ending to a new Cane hike. Thank you to Jan and Jim, Donna and Dana, and Peggy for joinig me on this interesting and convivial 5 mile hike, and to Jack for helping us eat the cookies.
