Jabe Pond Paddle ~ Sep 12, 2014

Journal entry by Peter for Tom

With wind and rain predicted for Thursday the decision to postpone the Jabe Pond paddle to Friday was a wise move on the part of Tom. After all, the forecast for Friday was for abundant sunshine and temps near 67 – NOT! How about a high of 52, with only a glimpse of the sun – that was until we were nearly home. Nonetheless, six hardy souls had a wonderful time on this beautiful little pond with its many islands and feeling of remoteness. The condition of the access road was unknown ahead of time but turned out to be only mildly rutty most of the way and very rutty in the one steep section – OK for vehicles with high clearance and AWD. There were a few cars already parked at the lot when we arrived but those were of fishermen that we only saw a couple of times during our four hour paddle. Getting ready took a little longer than usual while everyone (well almost everyone) tried to locate every bit of extra clothing they had to wear – hand warmers would have helped but who would have thought. Once on the water the paddling helped warm our bodies – all except Tom – he was chilled the whole day I think. Without any wind, the surface was flat and it didn’t take us long to reach the opposite side of the pond to locate a lunch spot – a little early for me but the Rebers would have been thrilled. We lingered longer than normal and wondered how it would have been had the sun actually appeared and wished we had brought hot tea instead of an iced drink. On our way again we headed for the island with a chimney – remnants of a camp that once occupied it long ago. We were able to explore some and imagined how it would have been staying the night on this peaceful, secluded site. Back to our boats, we completed the shoreline paddle and headed back to the cars for an early day. Great adventure – my first visit and guaranteed not to be my last. Thanks to Jan and Jim, Tom, Eric and Don for making this a memorable paddle. Pete for Tom
