Goodnow Mountain hike ~ Sep 15, 2016

Journal entry by Lynn Mayack

What a perfect day for a hike – sunny, no wind, blue sky, puffy clouds and a high near 70 degrees.  Even though most of us had a house project waiting at home, we opted to leave it for another day.  Twelve Caners left from the WCMC at 9:00am and we picked up another three at the Black Bear Restaurant in Pottersville. We were joined by one more who caught up with us on the trail after Peter convinced him it was too nice a hike to pass up.

Maintained by Syracuse University’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry and open to the public, the two mile trail to the summit was in good shape and there were signs of recent trail maintenance.  Lunch was leisurely as we took turns climbing the tower to take in the expansive views of the high peaks and the surrounding lakes.  We even had time to be entertained by Ed showing us a card trick.  As we were getting ready to leave we were joined by a couple and their dog. It was surprising how popular the hike was for a midweek September day.

After goodbyes at the trailhead, some opted for ice cream at Stewarts in North Creek while others checked out the alluring sandy beaches of Rich Lake that we saw from the fire tower for a future paddling trip or relaxing beach day.  Thank you to Gail, Shelley, Linda P., Jim, Cathy, Jan (new), Joy, Mike, Linda & Peter, Kurt, Ed, Sandy & Bob, and Peggy for joining me.
