Hudson River Bike ~ Aug 27, 2015

Journal entry by Ken Gericke

Hi Canes

A fine day for a bike and a little overcast making for comfortable riding. 19 Crooked Canes and EZriders set out from Rogers Island Visitors Center in Ft Edward and pedaled south along the west side of the Hudson. The Hudson River clean up project is still evident, with barges and dredging activity. About 7 miles out we leave the river and start up a short, but steep hill, just 75-100 ft of elevation change, but enough to offer beautiful views to the east across the river valley towards Greenwich, Schuylerville, and Willard Mtn. We leave West River Rd at Bacon Hill, crossing rt 32 onto Grange Hall Rd. Then a long exhilarating coast down rt 29 into Schuylerville. Near Fort Hardy Park we pick up the newly opened Champlain Canalway Trail, a short segment of bike path connecting Schuylerville, Lock 5 of the Champlain Canal, and Hudson Crossing Park, our lunch destination. This park is a gem, and a work in progress.

A pleasant surprise as we came off the bike path, Tom Gibbs joined us for lunch at the HCP pavilion. A great spot for a picnic, lots to see with nature trails, sculptures, artwork, and flowers. We say goodbye to Tom after lunch and head for the newly opened Dix Bridge, a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Hudson River from HCP in Saratoga County to Washington County. Some nice views up and down the river from this historical bridge which 1st opened in 1895. A pretty section of the Hudson, 1st a Native American crossing place, later known as Burgoyne's Boat Bridge where the British Army crossed on their way to the Battle of Saratoga. To the north we could also make out piers, the remnants of a trolley bridge, and just a bit further north, the remaining piers of a train bridge, now home to nesting osprey....a busy place throughout the centuries.

We reconnect with Rt 4 north on the Washington County side of Dix Bridge, and after a short side trip into Lock 6 at Ft Miller, it's a straight shot, about 8-9 miles back to Ft Edward for a round trip of about 27 miles. Thanks everyone for a great day. Attendees from the Crooked Canes and EZriders: Kathy, Glen, Peter and Donna Wood, Donna Westcott, Don, Jim, Jan, Lynn, Fran, Charlie, Karen, Joan and Fred, Rose, Tom McAdams, Teresa, and Pat. Great to See Tom Gibbs, and along the way we also ran into fellow bikers Jim Israel and Cindy and Paul Plante.

At HCP.... 3' high wire and blown glass Darning Needle sculpture. I took this photo on an earlier visit to the park. Unfortunarely, due to vandalism, some of the parks artwork is either damaged or missing.
