Lk George Bike Trail ~ May 16, 2013

Journal entry by Ken Gericke

What a difference a day makes! After a couple of 'too cold' spring days, Thursday's sunny skies and mid 70s temperatures were a welcome change and just about perfect for a bike ride. 18 CCs met at the bike trail parking area in Queensbury...Jack and Lenore, Donna and Peter Wood, Don P and Kathy, Leon and Karen, Donna Westcott, Kirk, Don M, Tom, Eric, Anita, Rose, Linda, and Fran. We split into two groups, 11 to pedal the approx. 16 miles to LK George and back, while 7 CCs opted to add a few extra miles and bike beyond LG Village to Diamond Pt, then returning to Shepards Park where all enjoyed a pleasant lakeside lunch.

From our vantage point we watched a few of the 'Lake Defenders' group in wet suits and scuba gear checking the effectiveness of the matting project along the shore of the lake. Last fall large canvas matting was installed to 'smother' the growth of invasive species like asian clams, milfoil, and zebra mussels. The matting, removed by the divers this spring, hopefully has been successful in curbing the alien species growth.

After lunch, from Lake George of today, we take a short side trip into Lake George of long ago and tour the Battleground Park where statues, plaques, and the remains of the never completed Ft George remind us of the rich history of our area.

Finally, we head south again, back to Queensbury. Thanks to all, a great ride in the beautiful Adirondacks.
