Bear Slide Hike by Karen Burke, substitute writer

I’m so glad we had our Thursday hike. I know I am not the only one who couldn’t do the scheduled hike on Friday – Thanks to Don and Tom for keeping us from sitting home all disappointed.

We met in Lake Luzerne and then moved all the cars to the parking lot of the Adirondack Folk School. This turned out to be a wonderful addition to our day, as we were invited in for an impromptu tour of the facility. It’s a fantastic place – we saw handmade canoes, toboggans and pack baskets, as well as a weaving room and well-equipped workshop rooms. They have classes in crafts of all kinds, with an Adirondack theme. We all took home a copy of the course catalog.

From there we carpooled to the trailhead for Bear Slide. The weather had been threatening rain all day, but from the time we set out until we were all well on our way home, not a drop fell on us. We enjoyed a scenic riverside walk, learned the identity of lots of wildflowers (thanks Lenore and Jack), saw several red efts, had lunch near the shore and then we were on our way to experience the Slides. And they were magnificent. The previous week’s rain was enough to guarantee lots of rushing water.

We welcomed a new friend to our group – Mary Ellen. She joined Linda, Lenore, Jack, Tom, Don, Ken and me on another wonderful adventure.
