Peebles Island/Lock 2/Champlain Canal Old Side Cut Juncta Hike ~ May 12, 2016

Journal entry by Denis Foley

Twenty hikers, including a new Caner June B, turned out on a warm sunny day to trek a path through NY State history.  We first visited the three 1860 Waterford Side Cut locks which allowed access from the Champlain Canal to the Hudson River. Today these locks are used as a spillway for excess water to flow into the Hudson River when Lock 2 on the Erie Barge Canal is being operated.

After a short visit at Lock 2 we crossed the restored RR bridge to Peebles Island - site of Mohican and early First Peoples encampments.  Hiking the perimeter trail we were able to see the breastwork fortifications for the 1777 defenses of Albany passing Polderump, Goat and Second Islands in the Mohawk on the way.  Our pace was leisurely and we stopped several times with hopes to see eagles fishing but none soared.  Many commented on how low the water level on the Mohawk was with only a trickle flowing over the dam.  Canada Geese were plentiful as were their droppings.  Completing the loop had us arrive at the Hudson River Overlook a little after noon where we spent a leisurely lunch under the shade of the pavilion or enjoying the sun on picnic benches on the lawn.

After lunch some of the group called it a day but most proceeded along the 1823-Old Champlain Canal to the White Mansion now the Waterford Historical Societies Museum (by the way the Town of Waterford is Celebrating its Bicentennial this year).  Along the canal the sunnies and other fish thrive and geese with yellow plumage goslings hissed us away while a single turtle could be seen sunning itself on a log.  Director Patricia Barrett gave a tour calling Peter and the hikers the Crazy Canes (surprisingly no one corrected her) while Linda and Fran wisely stayed in a cool spot out on the porch.  Tom Gibbs summed it up best when he said it was a “different pace and a perfect day”.
