A-Team Hike at Leon Steves and Hudson Point Preserves ~ Apr 5, 2017

Journal entry by Don McMahon

It was the only non-rainy day in the week with sun promised by noon. Eleven of us crawled out of our caves to share a new experience (Jim& Jan, 2 Lindas, Katie, Fran, Mary, Ed V, Sam, Bonnie and Don) in a nearby location (1.1 mile west of Northway Exit 18). As it turned out sun glasses and microspikes were not needed and the trails were not particularly muddy. The Leon Steves and Hudson Point Preserves has lots of elevation changes to warm one up and we had many views, mostly through trees, of the bay, both from near by and from above. However too early for flowers and birds, although some skunk cabbage and a few bird tweets were recorded. We had lunch at the "Point" of Hudson Point where we customarily have had lunch on canoe/kayak trips. We attempted in vain to use the lower (boards) walk and bridge trail after lunch but were turned back by high water - the boards approach to the bridge were under water. So we retraced our path but then traversed new trails in the Stevens Preserve to return to the cars 3 hours after arriving with no sun to be seen yet. A good hike and a good place to return to for birds and flowers. Also we have yet to explore the nearby, but not connected, Clendon Brook Preserve!
