Baxter Mt. ~ Feb 21, 2012

Journal entry by Ray and Peter

Hi Folks,

You guys missed a good hike today to Baxter. No takers so it was just Ray and me. Started from the trailhead at 10:30 with a temp of 32 and were on the ridge in less than an hour. The early arrival allowed us to spend lots of time taking in the super views from all the overlooks. Mt Marcy dominated the western end of the Johns Brook Valley with its snow encased dome profile with Big Slide guarding the northern flank and the mountains along the Range Trail the southern flank. At the start the skies were completely blue but had turned gray and the winds had picked up quite a bit by the time we reached the top. The trail was very icy with little snow in the woods. Most adjoining mountains and valleys were nearly snowless. Returned to the car for lunch and were off sightseeing and exploring trailheads for potential future hikes - back at the WCMC at 3:30.
